The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's SmartWay® Transport Partnership was launched in 2004 and is a voluntary program between the U.S. government and the freight transportation industry to reduce the industry’s fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
The SmartWay® Technology program develops test protocols and verifies the performance of vehicles, technologies and equipment that have the potential to reduce greenhouse gases and other air pollutants from freight transport operations. The program establishes credible performance criteria and reviews test data to ensure that vehicles, equipment and technologies certified or verified by the program will help fleets improve their fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.
TrailerTail® Can Make Your Fleet SmartWay® Certified
Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) tractors and trailers can obtain "SmartWay® Certified" status, while vehicle components, such as aerodynamic devices, can qualify for listing as "U.S. EPA Verified Technologies", sometimes referred to as SmartWay® approved technologies. Verification requires that components be tested in accordance with a modified version of SAE J1321 test protocol.
Aerodynamic devices that qualify as U.S. EPA Verified Technologies are divided into categories based on the part of the trailer they address and the extent of their third party tested fuel savings. The two categories that feature the highest estimated fuel savings, of at least 5%, are advanced trailer skirts and advanced trailer end fairings.

TrailerTail® and EcoSkirt® Fully Comply with CARB Regulations
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has adopted the Heavy-Duty Vehicle Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Regulation to improve the fuel efficiency of the heavy-duty tractor and 53 foot trailer combination through the implementation of tractor and trailer aerodynamics and low rolling-resistance tires.
